Like with most celebrations, the eating and drinking is a central part of the activity. Anyone who has been to, planned for or directly participated in a wedding will now what planning goes into the wedding reception dinner, the plate and silver-ware, the food and of course, the cake.
Trends come and go and new generations bring new traditions to old ceremonies and celebrations. For instance, champagne has passed wine as the favorite wedding reception drink (NAM Wedding Trends May 2008), white cake has made way for chocolate cake, and sushi and sashimi are becoming staple starters for the dinner reception. 20 years ago, that would have been unheard of.
You will also find that an increasing number of people are bringing on board European dining traditions which centers around the shot glass: During the dinner it is common for family and friends to make a speech to the blissed couple, celebrating them, telling a funny story from their childhood or similar. Often a speech ends with a toast and a round of applause.
European traditions around the speech are much more elaborate. At a traditional Scandinavian wedding, it is common to hear speeches from all of the immediate family including mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and of course best friends. A common dinner reception will go through 20 or 30 speeches and each speech does not end with a Champagne toast, but with a shot.
Regardless of how the wedding is being planned, shot glasses are indeed excellent party favors that will become handy and convenient before, during and after the reception.
