Wedding Favors – Should You Make Your Own?

Of course, you want the perfect wedding, right down to the last tiny detail.  And one of those little details you’ll have to decide on is wedding favors.  You may even consider making your own favors.  But is this the right choice for you?  Here are some questions to help you make up your mind.

Are you super-crafty?

If you have a passion for making stuff and the sales people at the local craft store know you by your first name, it might be right for you.  But keep in mind that making 100 or more wedding favors is not as fun as it sounds.  Doing the same thing over and over again makes it more like assembly work than crafting.  By the time you’re gluing the ribbon on the 38th wedding favor, you might wish you didn’t have 62 more to go.

Do you have time?

When you’re planning a wedding, there are so many little details vying for your attention.  You already have a lot to do.  And making your own wedding favors will probably take longer than you estimate.  If you’re working full time, see your fiance’ nearly every night and are already trying to squeeze so many other things into your tight schedule, you might want to reconsider taking on another project.  On the other hand, if you’re the organized type and have a lot of spare time, this might help distract you from counting the hours until you say, “I do”.

Do you have help?

Don’t just assume that you can gather volunteers from your wedding party.  After all, you didn’t choose your bridesmaids because they are fast with a glue gun!  Find out if this is something they would be interested in doing and would have the ability to do.  

Are you trying to save money?

Believe it or not, making your own wedding favors may not be cheaper.  Craft supplies can be costly, especially if your favors need a number of different materials.  If your main motivation for considering making your own wedding favors is your budget, first do some calculations. Add up the various elements you will need to purchase at the craft store to make your favors.  Figure out what each favor will cost.  Then, go online to see what personalized wedding favors are available for less than your hand-crafted version.  You might be surprised that it can cost less to buy.

Why are you considering making your own wedding favors?

This is perhaps, the most important question.  If the predominate reason is that you want to put an extra personal touch on your favors, then there are easier, and possibly cheaper solutions.  You can create one of a kind keepsakes for your guests by simply ordering favors online that you personalize with your  words and your photo.  These custom photo wedding favors can reflect you and your fiance’s personalities.  They can be in your wedding colors, with your style.  There are so many options for photo wedding favors to choose from: magnets, bookmarks, pocket mirrors, notebooks, coasters, candles,  mint tins and candy bars, to name just a few.

Another option is putting together favors that are semi-homemade.  You could print your names and date on clear labels, then adhere them to the outside of glass tea-lights, for example.  Or you could put your favorite candies in a fabric favor bag and tie with personalized, imprinted ribbons.  The idea is to add a quick, finishing touch to a favor, instead of making the whole thing from scratch.

But after all that soul searching, if you’re still inspired to create your own favors, then go for it.  Just make sure you have plenty of spare time, plus a bunch of dependable, dedicated friends and family members eager to take on this project.  You might even have a good time.

So, consider those questions before you come to any conclusions.  Figure out what’s best for you and what will work within your schedule.  And whether you decide to make your own wedding favors, order personalized photo wedding favors, or put together favors that are semi-homemade,  your guests will love them because they come from your heart.
